‘Initially some of these communities look so down hearted, wondering ‘what can we do for ourselves?’ Then you go back after three months and you see these women singing and dancing and working together’
The CWS Christmas Appeal has been a tradition in New Zealand churches since 1945 when the first Christmas Bowl appeal was launched to raise funds for post war reconstruction in Europe. Over 60 years later, parishes from different denominations along with individuals outside the church continue to come together each Advent to raise funds for development projects and emergency relief around the world.
In 2009 the focus was Give us a Chance. Poverty limits people’s ability to better their lives. Millions of people go without clean water, enough nutritious, education, health care, and decent income. Their vulnerability leaves them at the bottom, unable to rise. Given a chance, communities can escape the cycle of poverty. Supporting the CWS Christmas Appeal helps give them that chance.
